Action/ Thriller Genre

I am taking my inspiration from Taken 3. The trailer is very intriguing and exciting. Also i like how it has a very fast pace and that even though there is a lot to take in, it leaves you with mixed emotions about the character. The transition is very smooth it is very easy to understand and is captivating for example:  when we see the knife on the floor we know that he has been set up it helps move the story.

I like the equilibrium of this story, Man on fire,  I also really like the plot of this movie as well. It helps stem ideas of what to do for our opening sequence. Also the clear narrative at the beginning helps us understand a little more about the movie. I like how the wording is bold and the background looks vivid and disorientated.

I also take inspiration from Face off 1997. This has a lot of explosion and is more dramatic and slowly brings up the adrenaline that people may be feeling. Also some parts seem very comical whilst there is still a sense of seriousness.

Preliminary task

The brief  was to show that we understood continuity editing, this is when you film a sequence where a character will sit walk through a a door and sit opposite another person whilst have a conversation. I will show my understanding of the media terminology bu using match on action, shot reverse shot, what is most important is that i do not break the 180 degree rule.

In the group we discussed roles and decided on:

Casey will be doing camera work, whilst Maliek and I will be doing the acting. Also we will all have a role in editing.

The prelim will be a investigation, where a a detective is interrogating a serial killer, we also decided on intense music to create tension for the audience.

Aspect of Action/ Thriller

Style and iconography

What went well:

In my group, we were successful at doing a sound bridge to cover up the fact that we did a jump cut back do the door. When I (Detective Allen) was talking to Maliek, he made it clear that i was interrogating him, through eye-line match. Also we challenge ourselves by using a title at the beginning and by adding credits at the end which fitted the scene that we were doing, it also fitted as the film was called 'Guilty or not' it helped justify what we were doing in the scene and help the audience get a hint of what was going to happen in the scene. As well as it going with the genre that was being used (Action/thriller). The music also helped sway the mood of the scene as it instantly showed even before seeing anything that there was going to be trouble. It was sophisticated whilst still being mysterious.

What we could do better:

There was several things however that could have improved, one of these things was spacing, through the tracking shot that was used we were able to see that there was a lot of space behind me and Maliek, to improve we could have more of a close up when I am walking so it wont be so spacious. also our match on action could have been neater, for example when closing the door, to improve we can show me walking towards the door, also when am inside the door closing looked  too jumpy so we could get that more accurate.

Style - Most characters in Action/ Thriller films were plain clothing. For example in Taken, the main character wears mainly grey's or black clothing this is so he does not grab too much attention and blends in. In Some Action/ Thriller genres the use of mis -en- scene can vary. Once we begin to get deeper into the disruption of the equilibrium, for example in Man on Fire and Men in black they are issued in suits and dark sunglasses, however in Rush hour (even though they are wearing suits) they look more disorganized. This means that sometimes the protagonist may seem wealthy but he could have gotten his clothes from his Donor.

Iconography - They mostly use natural lighting in the beginning of the film but, eventually they will use more darker lighting to connote seriousness of the situation at hand. Sometimes the lighting will be quite dull as well to emphasis the main characters emotions.

Our Pitch : Malificent beauty

What went well:

We had good awareness of audience and BBFC research. Our pitch was presented confidently and everyone had a role to say. We had good films to compare to as well as clear ideas. We also showed a solid and clear understanding of our genre and what type of film we wanted to make, whilst trying to engage the audience with our presentation.

What we could do better:

Even though the awareness of genre was good, we could improve the mis-en-scene, such as the location. Also the casting could have been presented better.

I think that the pitch went well however could have been executed better. For example we forgot to talk about the sound that we would be using,  there could have been a little more detail on the Audience research, however because we prepared ourselves with scripts we were able to go through the pitch smoothly, some things however did go wrong with our pitch but we were able to improvise.

This is our official logo for our production which is called Maleficent Beauty

We positioned ourselves well and we also had  a script so each of us knew what we were saying.

In order for us not to rely on the board we mostly had pictures on our prezzie presentation whilst all the

details were on the

script.

Our roles in making the pitch:

Maliek:

Maliek roles was focusing on:

iconography/Mis-en-scene. He also had to talk about the plot of the script. Maliek also helped Casey and I with the dream cast.

Casey:

Casey Role was the making of the logo. She also did audience research, as well as doing introduction to narrative. Casey also helped me with the dream cast.

My role:

My role was to find our dream cast. I also helped with Audience research such as BBFC. I also wrote the script and research the genre of Action/ Thriller.

Our genre

I think that i understood our genre fully, the concept of an Action/Thriller was clearly understood by each of us. I think that we will be able to convey something similar to Taken and Man on Fire. Although this is our first time doing this genre i think that it will be shown clearly and understood by many.

Information for filming

Music:

The reason i chose this song was because it set of the equilibrium as it made the environment very tense which helped the added affect of the voice over.

Then song also  added the dangerous and enigma affect of the scenery and this music is a convention of Action/ thriller genre, as it helps build tension.
